The Future We Want document – agreed at Rio+20 – emphasises that “opportunities for people to influence their lives and future, participate in decision-making and voice their concerns are fundamental for sustainable development.”

The principles that define good governance make this possible: the processes and institutions that produce results that meet the needs of society while making the best use of the resources at their disposal.

Good governance is important for sustainable development, not just for the individual company, but for the economy as a whole. However, what is not measured, cannot be improved.

Most attempts to measure focus on compliance-related issues ignoring the quality of information, decision-making processes, or its contribution to output measures such as the brand image, employee and customer satisfaction, or profitability and value creation.

The need for such information arises at all levels – top down and bottom up. From senior decision-maker at the national and international levels to the grass-roots and individual levels.

The sharing of knowledge ethos of the WICMI speaks to this need: to the facilitation of the exchange of trusted information which is essential for sound decision-making.

Everyone is a user and provider of information.
